Safe, Attractive and Comfortable: Remodeling a Home for Life

With millions of Americans living longer and more active lives, many are looking to remodel in a way that will fit their lifestyle and abilities for decades to come.

The Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) program was developed by the NAHB to teach the technical, business management and customer service skills necessary for building contractors to fully understand the specifics of home modifications for the aging-in-place market.

Holly Harris, along with Jeff Boyd of Coast View Construction, Inc., earned her CAPS designation in 2011. She has been involved in the construction industry for nearly three decades.

Affordable Answers to Sustainable Living

Steve Thomas, Emmy Award-winning television personality and former host of the home improvement shows This Old House and Renovation Nation, has partnered with Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County to help raise awareness about the need for decent, affordable housing. In his presentation, Steve will discuss the affordable and sustainable living solutions that Habitat affiliates are using in these economically challenging times.

Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County is one of several affiliates across the country working to build homes that meet the ultra-energy efficient Passive Home Standard. The organization is currently building a home for a local family in Bellingham which is expected to cost less than $100 per year to heat.

Steve will talk about the sustainable construction techniques that Habitat for Humanity affiliates are exploring, promote Habitat’s upcoming Women Build project, and discuss how to find treasures at the Habitat Store while re-purposing items that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill. Come hear how Habitat produces lasting value for its volunteers, the low-income families it serves, and our community!
