The Building Industry Association of Whatcom County offers an ingoing slate of classes at affordable prices, for members and the community at large. All sessions meet at BIAWC offices, 1650 Baker Creek Place, Bellingham, WA. Registration deadlines are a week before each class, but early registration helps us accommodate you better, and is appreciated.

EPA Certified Lead-Safety/Renovation/Repair/Paint
Thursday, June 27, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
CREDITS: 8 Real Estate Continuing Education, 4 Plumber Clock Hours
Does your business involve the renovation, repair or painting of structures built before 1978? Construction firms must apply for and receive EPA Certification to disturb paint as part of their work in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities. In addition, all of these jobs must be supervised by Certified Renovators; specifically, individuals who have completed an EPA-accredited, full-day training course. The course is required for any contractor that is involved in any activity that will –or has the potential to – disturb six square feet of lead-based paint in a room or 20 square feet on the exterior. The rule does not apply to minor maintenance or repair activities; however window replacement is not considered minor maintenance or repair.

The maturing of the U.S. Baby Boomer population is a huge opportunity for remodelers. As this consumer group expands, more and more are interested in remodeling their home to fit their new lifestyle and abilities. This Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) course will help you understand the guidelines and requirements of accessibility, the importance of doing an assessment with input from occupational and physical therapists as well as qualified health care professionals, and the significance of good design in making modifications that can transform a house into a safe, attractive, and comfortable home for life. As a graduate of this course, you'll be able to
*Describe the home ownership market as it relates to the three segments of the Aging in Place market
*Consider contractual and legal concerns for building professionals providing design solutions to the Aging in Place client
* Perform a needs assessment to identify and prioritize the needs, wants and wishes of the Aging in Place client

Certified Erosion and Sediment Control
Tuesday-Wed., Sept. 24-25 -- 8-5 p.m.

Both classes are held at 1650 Baker Creek Place.
If your project disturbs more than an acre of land or is in a subdivision, you probably need a Construction Stormwater General Permit from the Department of Ecology. All such sites now require a Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CESCL) on-call or on-site to inspect, install and manage stormwater controls. This course is designed for residential builders.
The class offers16 Appraiser classroom continuing ed hours. Re-certification credit, Certified Graduate Associate (CGA), Builder (CGB), Remodeler (CGR) and Graduate Master Builder (GMB).
